Buzzing Sounds in Walls

Electricity should be silent. When you can hear it — a buzz, hum, crackle, or sizzle from a wall, switch, outlet, or panel — current is doing something it wasn’t designed to do. Some buzzes are benign; a few are the sound of arcing, which is how electrical fires announce themselves. Here’s how our DFW electricians tell the difference.

Decode the Sound

  • Faint 60 Hz hum from a dimmer or fluorescent fixture: usually normal. Dimmers hum quietly; cheap LED bulbs on old dimmers hum louder. Annoying, rarely dangerous.
  • Buzz from an outlet or switch: not normal. Loose terminations or worn contacts are vibrating under load — the early stage of arcing.
  • Buzz or crackle from inside a wall: take this seriously. A damaged cable, a junction box hidden behind drywall, or rodent-chewed wiring may be arcing. Kill the circuit.
  • Buzz from the breaker panel: a breaker under heavy load hums slightly; a loud buzz or sizzle means a breaker is failing to seat on the bus or a lug is loose. In FPE and Zinsco panels — common in older Fort Worth and Garland homes — this is a known prelude to failure. See our panel warning signs guide.
  • Sizzle or pop anywhere, especially in damp weather: active arcing. Breaker off, call now.

Why Walls Buzz in North Texas Homes

Three local factors show up again and again. First, age: the post-war and boom-era housing across Dallas–Fort Worth carries mid-century wiring under modern load. Second, critters: attic rats and squirrels are prolific in wooded neighborhoods from Grapevine to Flower Mound, and chewed insulation is one of the most common causes of in-wall arcing we find. Third, heat and expansion: North Texas temperature swings work screw terminations loose over decades — the same mechanism behind flickering lights.

What We Do on a Buzzing Call

We locate the sound source with the circuit energized (carefully — that’s our job, not yours), then de-energize and open the box or wall section. Typical fixes: re-terminating loose connections, replacing arc-damaged cable sections, replacing worn devices, and adding AFCI protection — the breaker technology designed specifically to detect arc signatures. It’s a standard electrical repair, flat-quoted, warrantied for 10 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

My light switch buzzes only when the light is on. Dangerous?

A dimmer with an incompatible LED bulb often buzzes — try a listed compatible bulb first. A standard on/off switch that buzzes has worn or arcing contacts and should be replaced promptly. It’s a quick, inexpensive fix.

Could the buzz be something other than electrical?

Occasionally — plumbing vibration or HVAC ductwork can hum. Test: flip the breaker for that area. If the sound stops, it’s electrical, and it needs eyes on it.
