Modern kitchens are the most power-dense room in the house by far, and the 1980s wiring behind your Plano or Carrollton kitchen was never sized for an induction range, a drawer microwave, and an espresso machine with opinions. Here’s how to get the electrical right the first time.

What Today’s Code Expects in a Kitchen

Two 20-amp small-appliance circuits minimum for countertop outlets — no sharing with lights or other rooms.
Dedicated circuits for the dishwasher, disposal, microwave, refrigerator, and any built-in oven or cooktop (often 240V).
GFCI protection on all countertop and sink-adjacent receptacles, and AFCI throughout — see GFCI vs. AFCI explained.
Countertop outlet spacing so no point on the counter is more than 24″ from a receptacle — including islands, which have their own rules.
Proper lighting circuits — layered task, ambient, and under-cabinet lighting on dimmers.

The Load Problem Nobody Budgets For

Add up a modern kitchen: induction range (40–50A), double oven (30A+), microwave (20A), dishwasher, disposal, fridge, wine chiller, plus two small-appliance circuits. Induction and the 240V Question

Induction cooking is taking over DFW remodels, and it usually means running a new 240V circuit — most gas-range kitchens only have a 120V outlet behind the stove. While the wall is open, it’s also the cheapest moment you’ll ever have to add wiring for future wants: pot filler instant-hot, under-cabinet outlets (a clean look that’s now code-recognized), toe-kick vacuums, or a smart home backbone.

Do islands really need outlets?

Receptacle rules for islands have evolved in recent code cycles, but practically: yes, you want power at the island, planned into the cabinetry before the slab guys arrive.
