GFCI and AFCI Outlets

They look almost identical on the wall, they both have TEST buttons, and they protect you from completely different ways of dying. GFCI and AFCI are the two great safety technologies of modern residential wiring — and most DFW homes we inspect have gaps in one or both. Here’s the difference in plain English, and where each belongs in your house.

GFCI: Protects People From Shock

A Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter compares current going out on the hot wire with current coming back on the neutral. If even 4–6 milliamps go missing — because they’re going through you to ground — it cuts power in a fraction of a second. That’s faster than a heartbeat and it’s why GFCIs have cut electrocution deaths dramatically since the 1970s.

Where code wants them: anywhere water lives — bathrooms, kitchen countertops, garages, laundry, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, exteriors, and pool/spa equipment (see pool electrical done right).

AFCI: Protects Your House From Fire

An Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter listens to the electrical waveform for the signature of arcing — the sputtering discharge from a loose termination, a nail-nicked cable, or rodent-chewed insulation. Ordinary breakers can’t see arcs at all: an arc can burn at thousands of degrees while drawing less current than a hair dryer. AFCIs catch exactly the failure modes behind most of the scary posts on this blog — buzzing walls, hot outlets, burning smells.

Where code wants them: essentially all living areas in current code — bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, kitchens, laundry.

What This Means for Your DFW Home by Age

  • Pre-1975 homes (older Dallas, Fort Worth, Irving): often no GFCI anywhere and zero AFCI. Highest risk, biggest safety gain per dollar.
  • 1975–2000 homes (Plano, Carrollton, Mesquite booms): GFCIs in bathrooms and maybe the kitchen; no AFCI.
  • Post-2002 homes: bedroom AFCIs at minimum; coverage expands with build year. Usually just gap-filling needed.

Retrofitting is straightforward: GFCI/AFCI breakers in the panel, or dual-function devices at the first outlet on each circuit. If your panel is too old to accept them — or it’s an FPE/Zinsco — that’s part of the panel upgrade conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my GFCI trip every time it rains?

Moisture in an exterior box, fixture, or buried splice is leaking current to ground — the GFCI is telling the truth. Have the outdoor circuit inspected; also see electrical problems after storms.

My AFCI trips when I run the vacuum. Defective?

Early AFCIs nuisance-tripped on some motor loads; modern combination AFCIs are far better. Persistent tripping can also be a genuine arc in that circuit — worth diagnosing rather than bypassing. Never “fix” it by swapping in a standard breaker.

How often should I press TEST?

Monthly, per manufacturers. Practically: put it on your seasonal safety checklist and do it when you change smoke alarm batteries.
