Your Three Real Options
- Portable generator + interlock (entry level). A 7,500–12,000W portable feeds selected circuits through an inlet box and a code-required interlock kit at the panel. You roll it out, fuel it, and start it. Lowest cost by far; runs the essentials — fridge, lights, furnace blower, internet.
- Whole-home standby generator (the set-and-forget). A permanently installed natural-gas unit (Generac, Kohler, Cummins — typically 18–26kW for DFW homes) with an automatic transfer switch. Power drops, it starts itself within seconds, whether you’re home or in Cabo. This is most of what we install through our generator installation service.

What “Installed” Actually Involves
A standby generator is a real construction project, and this is where licensed matters: a concrete or composite pad, a natural gas line sized and run by permit, the automatic transfer switch integrated at your service (often the moment we discover a panel that needs upgrading anyway), load calculations so the unit doesn’t stall on your AC’s inrush, city permits and inspection, and commissioning. Figure a day or two on site once equipment and permits are in hand.
Sizing for Texas Reality
The sizing question in DFW is always air conditioning. A 22–26kW unit typically carries a whole average home including one 4–5 ton AC with a soft-start kit; two-system homes either size up or shed the second system automatically. Don’t let anyone sell you a size without a load calculation — oversizing wastes thousands, undersizing strands you sweating in August.
Own It Like a Pro
Standby units self-test weekly and want annual service (oil, plugs, valve checks — like a small car). Batteries want firmware and capacity checks. Portables want fresh fuel and a monthly start. Put it on the calendar or on our maintenance plan and it’ll start when it matters.

Can I just backfeed my dryer outlet?
No. Backfeeding without a transfer switch or interlock can energize the utility line and kill a lineworker — it’s illegal and it’s the one thing we’ll refuse to look away from. The proper interlock kit costs a few hundred dollars installed.
