Most electrical fires give warnings for weeks or months first. This checklist is how you catch them. It’s the same walk-through logic our electricians use on safety inspections across Dallas–Fort Worth, organized so a homeowner can do the observation half in about 30 minutes — and know exactly which findings mean “schedule it” versus “shut it off now.”

The 30-Minute Walk-Through

• Every room: Do any outlets or switch plates feel warm? Any discoloration, cracking, or looseness? Warm or browned devices are a stop-and-call — see why hot outlets are dangerous.
• Listen: buzzing or crackling from walls, switches, or the panel. Silence is the only passing grade — here’s what buzzing means.
• Sniff: any fishy or hot-plastic odor near devices? That’s a burning smell emergency, not a checklist item.
• Test every GFCI (bathrooms, kitchen, garage, exterior): press TEST — it should snap off; RESET should restore. A GFCI that won’t trip is a dead bodyguard.
• Check cords and strips: no cords under rugs, through doorways, or daisy-chained power strips. Space heaters plug into walls only.
• At the panel: cover cool to the touch, no rust, no buzz, all breakers labeled, nothing tripping repeatedly (if so: read this first).
• Smoke alarms: test monthly, batteries yearly, replace units at 10 years. Texas doesn’t get winter house-fire season off — space heaters see to that.

Frequent breaker trips, house-wide flickering, any warm device, any burning smell, sparks beyond a tiny blue plug-in flash, or a breaker that won’t reset. These are the top-of-funnel symptoms behind most residential electrical fires — the NFPA counts tens of thousands per year nationally, and the origins are overwhelmingly the mundane stuff on this list.
