Level 1 vs. Level 2: The Only Comparison That Matters
- Level 1 (the cord in the trunk, 120V): 3–5 miles of range per hour. Fine for a short commute and overnight discipline; hopeless for a truck battery or a two-EV household.
- Level 2 (240V, 32–60A): 25–45 miles per hour of charge — a full battery every morning, effortlessly. This is the install: a 240V circuit, a hardwired wall connector or heavy-duty receptacle, sized to the vehicle and the panel.
The Panel Question (Answer It First)
A 48-amp charger wants a 60-amp circuit — often the largest single load in the house after the AC. Whether your panel can take it is arithmetic, not vibes: a proper load calculation across your service. Newer 200-amp homes in Frisco, McKinney, and Mansfield usually say yes. Older 100–125A services in Dallas, Irving, or Garland often need either a panel upgrade (costs in our guide) or the smarter cheap trick: a load-management device that throttles charging when the house is busy — frequently saving thousands versus a service upgrade.

Can I just use the dryer outlet?
Splitter gadgets exist, but a dryer circuit isn’t rated for continuous EV load, isn’t GFCI-protected, and isn’t permitted. The failure mode is heat at the shared receptacle — a dedicated circuit is the correct and honestly not-expensive answer.
