• Pre-1940s: knob-and-tube remnants (often live inside walls long after “the house was rewired”), cloth-insulated conductors gone brittle, no grounding anywhere.
• 1940s–50s: 60-amp services, fuse boxes, two-wire circuits and two-prong outlets, ceiling boxes overfilled by seventy years of fixture swaps.

• 1965–1973: the aluminum branch wiring window — the one era problem that should jump the queue.
• 1970s–80s: backstabbed devices, DIY den conversions, and the first generation of additions wired off overextended circuits.

The Symptoms Old Houses Whisper

Flickering lights, nuisance-tripping breakers, outlets that quit in one room, fuses that blow on the window unit — old houses rarely fail silently. The dangerous part is normalization: after a few years, “you have to jiggle the switch” becomes a house quirk instead of an open fault. Is my old wiring illegal?

Original installations are generally grandfathered. But insurers increasingly won’t cover knob-and-tube, fuse boxes, or unremediated aluminum — practical deadlines that arrive before code ones.

Can I renovate first and rewire later?

Backwards and expensive. Any remodel that opens walls is your once-a-generation cheap access — wire it while it’s open.
