Dimming: Where It Comes From
- Brief dim when a big motor starts (AC compressor, well pump): a small, momentary sag is normal — motors draw inrush current. If the dimming is dramatic or lights stay dim while the appliance runs, your service or a shared circuit is undersized.
- Dimming throughout the house at random times: could be a failing service neutral — the same defect behind severe flickering. This one can destroy appliances and needs same-day attention.
- Dimming on one circuit only: overloaded branch circuit or a loose connection heating up under load.
Surges: The Silent Electronics Killer
A surge is a momentary voltage spike. The dramatic ones come from lightning — and DFW sits in one of the most active thunderstorm corridors in the country. Do whole-home surge protectors really work?
Yes — a properly installed Type 2 SPD clamps surges in nanoseconds and protects everything downstream. It won’t survive a direct lightning strike to the house (nothing will), but it handles the vastly more common nearby-strike and grid-switching surges.
Why do my lights dim only in summer?
Summer is peak load: your AC cycles constantly and the whole neighborhood’s demand sags the grid. If dimming is severe, your service conductors or panel may be at capacity — worth an inspection before it becomes a failure in August.
